Terms of use

Last updated 24 October 2026. By using WaterProfile Local you accept these terms. They are short because the site is simple: it republishes water hardness figures from each utility's own report, with the report and the date it was read on every page.

What the site provides

WaterProfile Local shows water hardness values transcribed from each utility's own published water-quality report or water-quality page, in the units the utility used, with conversions made using the factors on the methodology page. Hardness classes follow the USGS Water Science School bands. The hardness converter and the softener grain capacity calculator run in your browser; every default in them that is not a published figure is labelled as an assumption and can be changed.

General information, not a test of your water

Everything on the site is general information. A utility's figure describes its system over its sampling period. It is not a measurement of the water at your tap, at your address or in your ZIP code, and hardness can differ between a utility's sources and over time. Hardness is not a measure of whether water is safe to drink, and the site does not assess whether any water is safe. Where a guide mentions health or sodium, it reports what the cited agency or extension source says. For your own water, read your utility's annual water quality report, ask your utility, or have it tested. The softener calculator gives an estimate from the inputs you enter; follow the softener manufacturer's instructions for sizing and settings. The site does not give individual or professional advice and does not tell you whether to buy any product.

Accuracy and changes at the source

Utilities publish new reports each year. A page here shows the figure as it read in the report and on the date stated; where it and the utility's current report differ, the utility's report governs. If you find a figure that does not match its source, please report it through the contact page.

No warranty and limit of liability

The site and its tools are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted availability. To the extent permitted by law, WaterProfile Local is not liable for any loss or damage, including the cost of equipment or damage to appliances or plumbing, arising from use of, or reliance on, the site or its calculators.

Using the content

Utility reports belong to the utilities that publish them. You may link to any page on WaterProfile Local and quote short passages with a link back. Republishing the site's own text, tables or charts in bulk needs permission by email.

Other sites and names

Pages link to utility reports, the USGS and other sources. WaterProfile Local does not control those sites and is not responsible for their content. WaterProfile Local is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any utility, agency or manufacturer named on the site; names are used only to identify where a figure came from or which product a guide discusses.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top of the page changes with them.
